
Brad Gushue started the 2009 curling season with a tournament victory, beating Norway's Thomas Ulsrud 6-3 in the final of the Baden Masters bonspiel in Baden, Switzerland on Sunday.
Gushue and his Newfoundland team of Mark Nichols, Ryan Fry and Jamie Korab scored a deuce in the fifth end to grab a 4-2 lead, and sealed the win with a steal of one in the eighth.
Gushue took home his second gold win in this event, having won it in 2007.
Alberta's Randy Ferbey lost to Ulsrud, last year's Baden Master's champ, in a semifinal earlier Sunday, 9-4. Ferbey played against Murdoch in the third place game, winning the game 5-2. This gave Ferbey an overall finish of third place, and Murdoch fourth place.
The Baden Masters featured teams from Canada, Japan, Russia, Scotland, Sweden, Germany, France and the Czech Republic.
Italy's Giuliano Razzoli takes the gold medal in the men's slalom.
