Pierre's Picks - 100 Days Out

TSN
Posted Wednesday, November 4, 2009 10:02 PM ET

With 100 days to go and less than two months before Hockey Canada officials submit their team list, Olympic hockey analyst Pierre McGuire gives his updated version of Team Canada, based on those players who are playing their best right now.

GOAL
Marc-Andre Fleury
Martin Brodeur
Roberto Luongo

DEFENCE
Scott Niedermayer
Shea Weber
Chris Pronger
Dan Boyle
Dion Phaneuf
Jay Bouwmeester
Brent Seabrook

FORWARDS
Rick Nash-Sidney Crosby-Martin St. Louis
Jeff Carter-Ryan Getzlaf-Corey Perry
Brenden Morrow-Mike Richards-Shane Doan
Patrick Marleau-Jordan Staal-Jarome Iginla
Patrick Sharp

WATCH LIST
Drew Doughty
Mike Green
Duncan Keith
Dany Heatley
Steven Stamkos
James Neal

Jarome Iginla, left, Brenden Morrow, centre, and Sidney Crosby, listen to coach Mike Babcock during the Men's National Olympic Team orientation camp in Calgary, Monday, Aug. 24, 2009. Forty-six of Canada's elite hockey players are in Calgary trying to make the 2010 Olympic team.

Q: One of the biggest changes is Jarome Iginla being dropped from the first line to the fourth line.

"Talking to Jarome this morning, he said 'I've always been a slow starter' but he's a little bit disconsolate because, this year, he had the Olympic orientation camp and thought he would get off to a great start," said McGuire. "He's not doing it offensively, he hasn't been moving his feet, he hasn't been forechecking very well and after talking to Brent Sutter, the Flames coach, he said 'I had a heart-to-heart with Jarome yesterday', so expect him to pick up the pace. That's one of the reasons why he's on the fourth line right now. Any Team Canada has to have Jarome Iginla but he's on the fourth line because he hasn't been producing to the level that he should."

Q: Patrick Marleau was considered by many a player on the bubble in the summer. Why do you have him on the team at this point.

"I think what we're seeing right now is Patrick Marleau is not very comfortable in a leadership position but he is very comfortable in a follower position where all he's counted on is to show up at the rink and score goals. He doesn't have to be the spokesman for the team, he has to be a big body that can skate and distribute the puck and when he has a chance to shoot it, shoot it. He's made a big difference for the San Jose Sharks. Everybody's talking about all these great players in San Jose, he's been the very best player on that team this year and if its not for him, San Jose's not at the top of the Pacific Division."

Q: The most fascinating part of your choices is the Watch List - the guys you think are being watched very carefully right now. One of the names on that list is James Neal.

"When you talk to people around the league, he's become one of the more dominant power forwards. He's already got eight goals playing for the Dallas Stars, he's their leading goal scorer. But the biggest thing about James Neal in talking to Marty Turco and Alex Auld - the two Dallas goalies who have to face him in practice every day - his shot coming down the wing just eats them up. It's a (Mark) Messier-type release, Mark Recchi-in-his-prime-type release. A left hand shot coming down the right side and his shot is overpowering goaltenders. He's got very good foot speed and he makes things happen off the forecheck. One of the big things coming out of 2006 (Olympics) - not enough youthful enthusiasm, not enough speed and not enough guys that can bring new "jam" to the room. James Neal and Steven Stamkos and Drew Doughty can all do that."

Not much to argue with here... Iginla on the fourth line? Sure, it likely won't happen but if the team were to be assembled today, you can't argue with that top line of Nash - Crosby - St. Louis... I still have my doubts about Fleury in net...maybe with time he'll ease my concern!

Canada does not need checkers of any kind on their team. Our best players can play both ways and you dont need checkers period. For once, send our most talented team.Don't send checkers wasting a spot. You don't need checkers if the other team is always chasing you. Shot handed not a issue as our top talent can play two ways.We have so much talent, send it, skip role palyers for once.

To comment on a few of the posts... Pronger would not be on this team if we were playing on the bigger ice surface in Europe because he isn't fast enough; but, he will be very effective on the North American sized rink and he is a leader who has size & is very physical, which we will need, so he needs to be on this team. Robin Regehr is a very good "stay at home" defenseman; but, he doesn't have the puck handling skills to be on this team. Lecavalier is playing badly at this point and he should not be on the team, or even on the "watch" list, unless he improves. Penner simply hasn't proven himself and he doesn't play all that well without the puck. I would love to see Toews on this team; but, he also hasn't played very well so far and now he's injured, so unless he comes back and burns up the league, he should not be on the team. Perry is playing great hockey right now; but, he can't beat out the likes of Thornton & Heatly. Ryan Smyth is still a great player; but, he has lost a step and he no longer belongs on this elite team.

I think this team Pierre has come up with is really good. Your all bashing him for picking this team based on reputation, which is funny cause as far as I'm concerned your all picking based on reputation. Why don't we just make the whole team up of centres. C'mon guys, Canada is a deep pool to pick from but we have to build a hockey team not just put a bunch of pure scorers together. Perry is on the team with Getzlaf cause they have unbelievable chemistry and are physically HUGE who bang around and intiminate the opposition. Eric Stall for Jordan Stall? Jordan's job is to check and shutdown which Eric doesn't do. Plus Eric isn't in the zone right now, his play is awful without Cole. Why would you take player whose not ontop of his game right now? My fellow Canadian hockey fans...thats just you picking based on reputation. One change would be switching up Stall with Richards. Oh man! Just looking at that team makes me jitter! They're a nasty bunch! Have fun Russia.

Like all the other posts, you have to have Thornton & Heatley on this team. PK will be huge, so yes, J. Staal. St. Louis & Doan have to be on this team. Replace Brodeur (playing badly) with Mason. Go with Sharp instead of Morrow, as we need goals & add Keith on the "D". Mobile defensemen will be our big advantage over the Russians (Other than Gonchar & Markoff). I would like to see Stamkos' speed and scoring on this team; but, he is still a bit inexperienced. If this is truely based on 1st half play so far, Iginla (who is great) needs to be on the "watch" list. We learned from Turin to go with the "hot" hand, not the traditional greats.

WHERE'S JOE THORNTON? He leads the league in assists and is 5th overall in points. I have no clue why he isn't on the team or even the watch list. What more does he have to do? He has always played well for team Canada in the past.
