London 2012 Olympic organizing committee signs up engineering sponsor

LONDON -- London Olympic organizers signed up engineering firm Atkins as a design consultant Monday in the third sponsorship deal announced in the past week for the 2012 Games.

Atkins will be London's official "engineer design services provider,'' helping design temporary venues in the capital and across the country for the Olympics.

Atkins becomes London's second third-tier domestic sponsor, reportedly worth at least 10 million pounds (C$18.1 million), and 12th overall.

The London organizing committee, or LOCOG, has secured more than 75 per cent of its target of 600 million pounds (C$1.08 million) from domestic sponsors. It has an overall operating budget of 2 billion pounds (C$3.6 million), which is also raised through television rights, ticket sales and licensing.

LOCOG chief executive Paul Deighton said the recent deals come as a boost amid the economic downturn.

"In the last week we have been able to announce three deals in a difficult economic situation so that people in our delivery areas can identify who they need to work with,'' he said. "The deals we are looking at now are really deals that are capable of bringing delivery to the table.''

Last week, LOCOG announced deals with Boston Consulting Group to advise on ticketing and merchandising and with Adecco to supply staff for the games.

Atkins had already been involved with the Olympics since 2005, helping to clear and clean the Olympic Park site and develop roads, bridges and utilities.
