Written records show the first instance of the Olympic Games were held in 776 BC. It is generally thought, however, that the Games were founded in the late 7th century BC while Greek mythology says they were founded by Heracles, son of Zeus.

The Founder of the Modern Games

In 1894, Pierre Frédy, Baron de Coubertin, secretary general of the Union of French Societies of Athletic Sports, announced that he wanted to bring back the Olympic Games.

Inspired by the by the ideals of the Ancient Olympics, Baron Pierre de Coubertin wanted to improve education through sport. So he helped found the IOC, which organized the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 in Athens, Greece.

In 1999, the International Olympic Committee changed the way it selects a host city for a Summer/Winter Olympics after a scandal erupted over the selection of the Salt Lake City Games.
