Synchronized swimming is one of only two disciplines (along with rhythmic gymnastics) that are contested only by women at the Olympic Games.

There are two events on the Olympic program:

Duet                                    Team

All events will be held at the Aquatic Centre in the Olympic Park.

London 2012 Storylines:
London 2012 will mark the 20th anniversary of the Barcelona 1992 Games and the scoring controversy that decided the gold medal in the synchronized swimming solo event.  Canada's Sylvie Fréchette was thrown into controversy during the figures portion of the event when the Brazilian judge, Ana da Silveira, scored one of Fréchette's figures as 8.7.  Da Silveira announced that she had made a mistake and tried to change her score to the 9.7 she intended.  The change was not permitted and Fréchette finished second behind American Kristen Babb-Sprague. In December 1993, upon FINA's recommendation and with the IOC's approval, Fréchette received a gold medal, making her co-Olympic Champion with Babb-Sprague.

Another storyline to follow is the Russian dominance in the discipline, as the nation has claimed every Olympic gold medal in both duet and team events since Sydney 2000.

Canada's Outlook:
Canada has won eight Olympic medals in synchronized swimming, the most recent medal being a bronze in the team event in Sydney 2000.  Both the Canadian duet and team have an excellent opportunity to return to the podium and increase Canada's all-time medal haul in 2012.

The Canadian team is eyeing a return to the podium in London 2012 after several notable results in the last two seasons.  At the 2009 World Aquatics Championships, Canada finished fourth in both the team technical and free events.  In addition, the team leader, Marie-Pier Boudreau-Gagnon, and her partner, Chloé Isaac, finished fourth in the duet free event.  Boudreau-Gagnon is now competing with a new duet partner in Élise Marcotte. After dual fourth place finishes at the World Championships, both the duet and the team were able to shine at the Pan Am Games, capturing gold in both events and earning Olympic berths for Canada.
