2006 - 07 2005 - 06 Canadian snowboard head coach Mark Fawcett says Morison is humble yet aggressive. Fawcett describes him as the type of athlete you have to hold back, not push. He says Morison just does what he has to do and doesn't get wrapped up in the hype of his events. "Matt's kind of got that figured out. There's all this crap and craziness going on at the World Cup and blah, blah, blah. And he just snowboards around gates. Keeps it simple. It doesn't matter if it's world championships, a World Cup or provincial event," Fawcett said in an interview with the Toronto Star Morison says competing in Vancouver at the Olympics has been on his mind for a long time. "It's something I think about every day. It's a huge event. To get a gold medal there can change your life. That was always the dream as a kid. I want to win a gold medal at the Olympics. Everybody does. Obviously I know now how much work it's going to take," said Morison in an interview with the Toronto Star.
Morison finished sixth overall in the 2008-09 World Cup alpine snowboard standings. His season was highlighted by the bronze medal he won at the 2009 World Championship.
Morison had a very successful season, getting to the World Cup medal podium four times, including one first place finish. All four medal performances came in parallel giant slalom, the same event Morison hopes to compete in at the Games in Vancouver.
He began the season with a third place result in Italy, followed by two more bronze medals. The highlight of the season was finishing first, again in Italy, in the World Cup race March 15th.
This season was a busy one for Morison as it was his first season on the World Cup circuit. He had one top 10 finish (10th in parallel slalom) at the 2007 World Championship and finished 12th in the parallel giant slalom. But things started looking up in late January. After his first five World Cup appearances, Morison finally made it to the medal podium on Jan. 28, 2007. He won a bronze in the parallel slalom in Nendaz, Switzerland. After that win, he says, he knew he belonged on the World Cup circuit racing against the best in the world. More success soon followed as Morison finished second less than two weeks later in Russia. The following week, Morison won his first World Cup race, taking gold in the parallel giant slalom in Japan.
Morison spent this season competing mostly in North America. Morison finished fifth at the World Junior Championship but the highlight of the season was the Nor-Am Cup final in Crystal Mountain. Morison had been very disappointed with his season and had been spending hours on the phone with both his current coach and former coach trying to figure out why. But in competition, he finished third in the parallel giant slalom and was the top Canadian. That result earned him a spot on the national team.
Italy's Giuliano Razzoli takes the gold medal in the men's slalom.
Mathieu Giroux, Lucas Makowsky and Denny Morrison win a tight race with the US.
