ST MORITZ - Lindsey Vonn won a super-G race Sunday to clinch the discipline title in the final World Cup race before the Vancouver Olympics.

The 25-year-old American timed 1 minute, 1.77 seconds on the Corviglia piste for her ninth win of the season and third in super-G.

Vonn cannot be caught in the super-G standings with two races left in March.

"It's a big relief to have that finished up before the Olympics,'' said Vonn, who won the discipline title in the final race last season.

Vonn also extended her lead in the overall standings to 137 points over Maria Riesch of Germany, who placed 11th Sunday.

Marie Marchand-Arvier of France and Austria's Andrea Fischbacher tied for second, trailing Vonn by 0.17 seconds.

Emily Brydon of Fernie, B.C. was top Canadian, in ninth spot. Shona Rubens of Canmore, Alta., was 18th.

It was Marchand-Arvier's best result since taking silver in the super-G behind Vonn at the world championships last February at Val d'Isere, France.

"It's a very good way to prepare for the Olympics,'' the 24-year-old Frenchwoman said.

Fischbacher, who took bronze in that worlds super-G, had been a doubtful starter after crashing out in Saturday's downhill won by Riesch.

In a season marred by serious injuries, Nadia Fanchini crashed out heavily midway through her run Sunday.

The 23-year-old Italian's ski caught an edge and sent her tumbling forward through a control gate into a rolling fall. No details of her injuries were immediately available.

Fanchini won a worlds bronze in downhill last year, in which Vonn won gold, and was expected to challenge for an Olympic medal.

Vonn said she was happy to have completed her Olympics race preparation safely.

"I'm really relieved to have made it through the World Cup without any injury,'' she said.

The women are next scheduled to race Feb. 14 at Whistler Mountain for the gold medal in super-combined.

However, Vonn said she skied aggressively Sunday to "take revenge on the hill'' following a disappointing fifth place Saturday in what was her first loss in a World Cup downhill this season after dropping speed when hitting a hole in the snow.

Vonn's first career win at St. Moritz was her 31st in World Cup races, lifting her into a tie for seventh on the all-time list with Erika Hess of Switzerland.
