
WILLINGEN, Germany - Austria's Gregor Schlierenzauer leaves for next week's Winter Olympics on a winning note after finishing in first place in the World Cup ski jump event here on Saturday.
With rival, Swiss Simon Ammann, not taking part, the 20-year-old recorded jumps of 142 and 137 metres to pick a total of 273 points, beating Norway's Anders Jacobsen (269 pts) and Germany's Michael Neumayer (264 pts).
Victory for Schlierenzauer was the 32nd World Cup win of his career and puts him on 1192 points in the overall World Cup rankings.
But he remains in second place behind Amman, who has 1249.
The Willingen event finishes on Sunday before competitors head to Vancouver for the Winter Olympics, which run from February 12-28.
Italy's Giuliano Razzoli takes the gold medal in the men's slalom.
