Canada's Christine Nesbitt won the gold medal in the women's 1,000 metres at the long track speed skating World Cup in Heerenveen, Netherlands today, with a time of one minute, 15.47 seconds. It is the second gold in the 1,000m in as many events for Nesbitt, who has also won gold in the first 1,500m World Cup of the season.
"I was in a much better place than yesterday, mentally," said Nesbitt. "I went a little faster than last week, but I still have things to work on. I felt really powerful, but wasn't very fluid."
Second place went to Annette Gerritsen of the Netherlands, in 1:16.03. Dutch skater Natasja Bruintjes finished third, in 1:16.08.
Canada's Kristina Groves finished sixth, in 1:16.62. Brittany Schussler finished 15, Cindy Klassen finished 18.

Canada also took gold in the women's team pursuit, with an almost two second gap back to second place finisher, the Netherlands. Nesbitt, Schussler and Groves skated together to finish in 3:00.39.
"We raced together at the World Championships last year and used the same tactics here, which work really well for us," said Nesbitt.
Canada's men finished eighth in the men's pursuit. Norway won the team event, followed by Japan in second and Poland third.
Italy's Giuliano Razzoli takes the gold medal in the men's slalom.
