It was a triple medal day for Canada at the World Cup Short Track Speed Skating event in China with Charles Hamelin picking up a pair of medals.

Hamelin started the day with a silver in the men's 1,000m event before helping the men's 5,000m relay team win the bronze.

"I had to do two inside passes and one outside during the race," said Charles Hamelin. "Near the end, I passed my brother on the inside, he was second and I was third. I then tried to plan a move on the Korean in the last lap, but I lost my balance a bit in the last corner so I couldn't fight for the finish."

Brother François Hamelin also advanced to the finals of the 1,000m but could not join his brother on the podium, finishing fourth.

Lee Jung-Su of Korea took the gold while teammate Kim Seoung Il captured the bronze.

François-Louis Tremblay qualified for the B-final in the 1,000m, where he finished second.

The Hamelin brothers did team up to lead Canada to a third place finish in the relay behind Korea and China. Olivier Jean, Guillaume Bastille and Tremblay - who replaced Bastille in the final - also skated.

"We would have liked to win the silver," said Hamelin. "There was a lot of action, a lot of passes, many touches too, we were second at the end, but China passed us in the last corner, so it's a bit disappointing, but overall it was a good race."

The women's 3,000m relay team picked up bronze. The team of Tania Vicent, Marianne St-Gelais, Jessica Gregg and Valérie Maltais finished behind Korea and the United States.

"The relay went well," said St-Gelais. "We were fourth for most of the race, China and Korea created a big gap with us and the US, but later in the race, China made a mistake and they fell, so we took advantage of that to take the third place."

Gregg, a silver medallist on Saturday, failed to advance past the quarterfinals in the women's 1,000m event after finishing third in her respective heat.

Kalyna Roberge withdrew from the quarterfinals after suffering from back problems on Saturday.

Katherine Reutter of the United States took the gold with Lee Eun-Byul of Korea the silver and Jessica Smith of the United States capturing the bronze.

Wang Meng of China, the defending champion in this event, finished a disappointing fourth.

The World Cup season resumes next weekend in Japan.
