4 medals for Canada at short track World Cup

MARQUETTE, Mich. - François-Louis Tremblay and Charles Hamelin won gold and bronze respectively as Canada took home four medals at the short track speedskating World Cup on Saturday.

Tremblay of Alma, Que., won the men's 500-metre race in 42.437 seconds, ahead of France's Thibaut Fauconnet (43.397) and South Korea's Sung Si-Bak.

"It is very encouraging,'' said Tremblay, "because heading to the Olympics you don't want to think that your best result is fifth. So you want to have always been thinking of how to shoot for the gold at the Olympics.

"I wanted to see it before so I can still believe in it.''

Sung set a world record of 40.651 in the preliminary heat but failed to capitalize, skating to a distant 1:02.747 in the final.

Sung's record did little to faze Tremblay, who insisted he didn't think about the mark heading into the final.

"In the final usually you are going more for the win than for the time,'' said Tremblay. "This is going to keep the morale up until the Olympics and it's going to help me in training.''

Hamelin, of Ste-Julie, Que., won bronze in the men's 1,500 behind winner South Korea's Jung-Su Lee.

Lee won gold in 2:13.595 seconds while Hamelin of Ste-Julie, Que., finished in 2:14.216.

Apolo Anton Ohno of the U.S., (2:13.731) was second.

In the women's 500, Kalyna Roberge of St-Etienne-de-Lauzon, Que., and Marianne St.-Gelais of Montreal won silver and bronze behind China's Wang Meng.

Wang won in 42.961 ahead of Roberge (43.339) and St.-Gelais (43.373).

China took the top two spots in the women's 1,500, with Zhou Yang finishing in 2:22.700 to edge Liu Qiuhong. Eun-Byul Lee of South Korea was third.

Valérie Maltais of La Baie, Que., (2:24.217) was fourth while Roberge (2:26.844) finished fifth.

Saturday was the second round of qualifying for athletes to secure spots at the 2010 Olympic games in Vancouver. Results from Marquette's World Cup will be combined with last week's World Cup results from Montreal.
